A few practical decisions make the equipment shortlist much easier.
01 / What will it do?
List the jobs: family file storage, backups, media, home automation, virtual machines or a learning lab. Note how many people and devices will use it.
02 / Where will it live?
Measure the available width, depth and height. Consider noise, airflow, power access and maintenance space, especially near bedrooms or living areas.
03 / How will it connect?
Note your internet service, router, switches, Wi-Fi coverage and any existing network outlets. A faster device helps only when the rest of the connection supports it.
04 / How will you recover?
Storage redundancy does not replace a backup. Decide which files matter most and plan a separate recovery copy.
05 / What is the whole-project budget?
Include drives, memory, network upgrades, mounts, installation and ongoing running costs.
